In the Sriranganadha Yadhavaraya inscriptions, residents of (present day Chetpet) then Elumbur - Thudarmuni are believed to have paid subsidies. Elumbur is among the regions that fell under the East India Company since 1720.

During their period, the British men converted the name Elumbur into their slang and called it Egmore. Since then, the name Egmore is in practice without even knowing the actual reason behind the name.
